Last weekend my sister-in-law came over to watch a movie. When she saw me, she sort of gawked and asked, Are you wearing jeggings?!
I suddenly felt defensive. I got them from Uniqlo, why?
She started laughing and said, Are you wearing thongs at least?
Thongs? Ugh, no, I hate wearing those!
She raised her eyebrows and exclaimed with a mischievous smile, I hope you don’t have panty lines!
I’m wearing a long shirt to cover my bottom. I say this as I tug at my polka dotted shirt.
You didn’t wear them with Uggs, did you?
Yeah, I did, I replied. She thought I was joking.
What, it’s my laundry stay at home outfit when I don’t wear a bra and just want to be comfortable.
Which you wore out to dinner, said Mister as if he were finally glad for someone else to support him on his anti-jeggings sentiments.
It was only pho, I retorted. I’m not going to put on a bra and change my outfit for pho.
Then it dawned on me that I had worn a Roxie hoodie of which I’d sewn thrift store fabric into the hood, no bra, jeggings, and Uggs to dinner with Mister’s friends. Do I really have no dignity? But to be honest, I couldn’t figure out what the big deal was. I kind of feel attractive in clothes like that. Like today is laundry day and I’m wearing a light grey long underwear shirt underneath a short sleeved military/ Boy Scout khaki shirt, and I think I look pretty hot. Maybe I’m totally delusional, but I’m the type to put comfort first. And I guess if I feel comfortable, I feel good.
It’s not that I don’t appreciate fashion. I marvel at beautiful clothes- the way they drape, the colors, the cut, the feel. I just don’t have much experience with it, nor the money to make it a hobby. And it’s kind of overwhelming- all the clothes that are out there and the constant changing of trends. I want to have my own style that goes beyond time, the way Audrey Hepburn did with her simple dresses and short bangs. But I guess jeggings and Uggs is not the greatest place to start . . .
P.S. Caroline, I’m waiting for your words of wisdom on textiles and style!
